Admission Requirements
- The common regulations for the Master’s degrees in the University of Nairobi and the School of Education shall apply.
- A holder of Bachelor of Education degree with at least Upper Second Class honours degree of the University of Nairobi or its equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
- A holder of any other Bachelor’s degree of the University of Nairobi with at least an upper
- second class honours and postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
- A holder of lower second class degree in education obtained from the University of Nairobi
- and three years teaching experience or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
- A holder of a pass degree in Education from the University of Nairobi and five years teaching experience or any other qualification recognized by the Senate.
- A bachelor’s degree in relevant fields with Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

Exam Regulations
Written Examinations
6.1 Each course unit shall be examined at the end of the semester in which it has been taken.
6.2 Each course unit shall be examined by Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) and a three hour written paper at the end of the semester.
6.3 For each course unit the Continuous Assessment (CAT) shall carry 30% and the end of semester examination 70% of the marks.
6.4 Pass mark for each course unit shall be 50%.
6.5 A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in any course unit may on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval of Senate be allowed to take up to two supplementary examinations.
6.6 A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the second supplementary examination shall on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by the Senate be:
i) Discontinued if the failed course is a Core course
ii) Allowed to take another elective in the same area of specialization or re-take the failed course in the elective provided the stipulated maximum period of 12 semesters is not exceeded.
6.2 Examination for Thesis
6.2.1 Regulations governing the examination of a thesis in the University of Nairobi shall apply.
6.2.2 During the second year, a candidate shall be required to write a thesis in English, of about 50,000 words in their area of specialization under supervisors duly approved by the Senate.
6.3 Examination for Project
6.3.1 A candidate shall be required to submit a supervised research project report for examination to the department at most five (5) months after successful completion of the elective course units and atleast two (2) weeks before end of the semester in which work is to be examined.
6.3.2 The project shall be about 20,000 words (approximately 80 pages) on an issue of interest and relevance to the six areas of specialization.
6.3.3 Pass mark for the research project shall be 50%.
6.3.4 A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the research project may on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval of Senate be allowed to re-submit the project for examination up-to two times within the stipulated maximum period of 12 semesters.
6.3.5 Candidate shall be allowed to work on a research project for up-to two semesters. All re- submissions must be done within the two semesters.
6.3.6 A candidate who fails to complete the programme of study within a period of eight (8) years shall on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval of Senate be discontinued.
